Spirit of Christmas
Edna Ferber once said: Christmas isn’t a season, it’s a feeling. And so it remains, that giving is still the best feeling you can have during the holidays. That’s where the real joy is. That’s why we partnered with The Smith Family Appeal three years ago.
Christmas, of course, is widely recognised in our community as the one time when underprivileged families really feel the pinch. 662,100 Australian children live in jobless families and The Smith Family Appeal operates in 94 territories across the country, in order to reach these kids before Christmas day. It’s like a modern day version of Santa Claus or Saint Nicholas dropping presents down chimneys for little kids.
An extra book or a toy for a child can make a real difference on Christmas morning – especially for kids that miss out all year round. Children and young people living in disadvantage have access to fewer books and learning materials in the home, so educational gifts are encouraged, as well as fun summer gifts.
Today The Smith Family is run by The Salvation Army. It was founded back in 1922, when five concerned businessmen got together and decided to deliver toys to orphans on Christmas Eve.
Since then, The Smith Family Appeal has grown and developed to have an educational focus, but the Christmas drive is still a strong part of its annual program.
This year we’re hoping to gather 300 presents for The Smith Family Appeal. If you would like to donate a gift, please email us here. The cut off date for donation in our offices is Friday 9 December. We hope you will join in our gift drive, so you can wake up on Christmas morning knowing your gift has brought a smile to a little kid’s face.
