Reimagining a modest mid-century abode.
In the right hands, a one-bedroom apartment can transcend its size, becoming a haven of comfort and creativity. This statement rings true for this inner-city pad within The Gateway, a landmark 1950s building, thanks to the enduring appeal of mid-century design and the artistic sensibility of its owner, Claire Lloyd.
Claire—an Australian designer, photographer, and author—spent nearly three decades immersed in London’s fast-paced creative scene before seeking a slower rhythm on the Greek island of Lesvos. But before that move, there was this apartment—her Potts Point retreat, where every inch of its 55 square metres embodies her design ethos.
“It was charming,” she recalls of the space when she first bought it some 30 years ago in its original state. “I wanted to simplify the interiors and focus on the spectacular wraparound views of the harbour and city skyline, framed by the building’s iconic modernist architecture.”
Her vision was clear: open it up, maximise the views, and let natural light pour in. She removed walls between the living and kitchen areas, capturing city skyline vistas. The wall between the bedroom and living space was replaced with glass doors, softened by linen drapes.
“From the sofa, I can see out to the heads through the balcony window and towards the navy base through the bedroom,” she says. “Removing walls invited the views from every corner and allowed natural light to flood the space—something I can never get enough of.”
That love of light informs every design choice. High ceilings and full-height doors amplify the sense of openness, while a restrained palette keeps the focus on texture and warmth.
“My aesthetic has always been relaxed, feminine, simple, and light,” Claire reflects. “Growing up in Australia, surrounded by space, sunshine, and big skies, shaped my style. Living in Greece has deepened that influence.”
The kitchen, sleek yet understated, is designed for ease and functionality. Compact yet serene, the bathroom is one of Claire’s favourite spaces, featuring a deep bathtub perfect for unwinding. Copper fixtures from Brooklyn Copper Co. lend a quiet sense of luxury. And then, there’s the bedroom—a peaceful sanctuary bathed in a soft glow.
“It’s always a beautiful place to wake up in,” Claire shares. “I had my bed made in London many moons ago, and even now, looking through the glass doors from the sitting room to the bedroom, it still brings me joy.”
Beyond the apartment, Potts Point offers its own allure. Claire speaks of its architectural beauty, the hum of village life, and the delight of its many alfresco dining spots.
“I’m sure the next owner will love this harbourside home as much as I have,” she says. “Everything is nearby—from walks in the Royal Botanic Gardens to a swim at Andrew (Boy) Charlton Pool. And when it’s time to come home, this space is calm, gentle, and nurturing—exactly as it should be.”
