Layers of love: A Lilyfield cottage reimagined for family life.
In the leafy heart of Lilyfield, a double-fronted weatherboard cottage tells a story of transformation and charm. Beneath its gabled roofline and behind the white picket fence lies a home that has grown with its family, blending memories with boundless potential.
For over 15 years, this bright and welcoming residence has been the beloved home of Pippa and Brent Duffy and their four boys. Over time, it has been reimagined into a family haven where lifeâs milestones unfolded, one thoughtful renovation at a time.
âWhen we first moved in, we fell in love with its character and the way it sat so beautifully within the neighbourhood,â Pippa reflects. âIt was a perfect starting point, but over the years, as our family grew, we knew the house could grow with us.â
From the beginning, the Duffys approached the home with care, weaving their vision into its original footprint. Small updates came first – a reconfigured ensuite, expanded wardrobe space, and, eventually, a backyard pool that inspired calm summer days. However, the real transformation began when the couple partnered with local Balmain-based architect Christopher Jordan to imagine how the home could truly flourish.
With a vision to create space and light while honouring the homeâs roots, the collaboration resulted in what is now, nothing short of a reinvention. A second story was added, accommodating another generous living area, while the kitchen and living spaces on the ground floor were opened up, connecting to the garden and increasing flow inside and out.
âThe result is a home that feels modern yet classic, with spaces that are as beautiful as they are functional for family life,â says Pippa. âCentral to our vision was the kitchen; we kept its original layout but introduced a huge butlerâs pantry and a marble island, now the heart of our home.â
The design embraces a soft, neutral palette, allowing vibrant touches to come to life through colourful furniture, greenery, and textured elements like terrazzo and pressed metal. Chevron flooring adds refined elegance, while the laundry – once a humble âouthouseâ on the back deck – has been incorporated within, elevated to match the homeâs current aesthetic.
âLaundries are so underrated, and I wanted ours to have great storage, a usable bench for folding, and even a glorious, light-filled access to the side passage,â shares Pippa. âThe heated flooring wasnât even on my wishlist, but itâs such a bonus.â
Like all homes, the soul of Point Street for the Duffys lies in the memories it holds. It was here that they brought their youngest son home from the hospital, marking a sense of contentment and âcompletionâ of their family. Itâs where Sunday nights became sacred, and where conversation of dayâs passed spilled around the dining table and by the pool. Itâs where everyday moments – the morning coffee, walks to Callan Park, and trips to and from Orange Grove school – formed part of the familyâs rhythm.
âLife in Lilyfield and on Point Street has given us so much,â Pippa says. âI can see the memories that a young family could make here with the neighbours. How warmly welcomed they will be into this wonderful street and the Lilyfield community, just as we were. I think for us it feels like a changing of the guard. Weâll cherish what Point Street has gifted us forever.â
While the Duffys are on the cusp of their next chapter, they take comfort knowing theyâve crafted a home that will grow with another family, from the first 15 days, through to the next 15 years (and more).
