A dream home set on Birchgrove Oval
Only a handful of homes on the Balmain Peninsula boast an outlook such as this – a house that opens to a green backyard before drawing your gaze across the adjoining Birchgrove Oval and transporting you into the views beyond.
In the background, Sydney’s most iconic landmarks are on show with the Sydney Harbour Bridge forming an awe-inspiring centrepiece. When the sun rises over the Pacific Ocean behind this scene, the surrounding waterways light up, making it even more special.
Complete with a sophisticated family residence of expansive indoor/outdoor entertaining spaces, it’s lavishly appointed with the quality and refinement expected from a house of this calibre.
The freestanding design spans four levels, able to be enjoyed in a number of configurations between three and five bedrooms, with its current format housing a home office as well as a family room or media space.
Perhaps key to the home’s current functionality is the way it has been updated by its owners over time. COX Architecture was responsible for the masterplan of the initial extensions. It was then re-fit with custom cabinetry and a new eye for integrated storage ideas and enhanced outdoor connection.
The current owners, Sam and Laura, added the fourth level, unlocking even more of the views which take in Cockatoo Island on the other side of the home. They purchased the home sight-unseen from London, after family members who lived in the area confirmed there was something special here.
“The sun rises in the windows of the master bedroom and swings around the house all day,” Laura says.
“To have that light streaming all the way into every bedroom and throughout the house is just wonderful, and waking up each morning to the view of the Harbour Bridge is something you really can’t describe.”
With the oval masquerading as an extension of the backyard, the location has its own obvious benefits for family life. From the playground to the sporting facilities, to the accessibility of public transport and ferries, the setting offers utmost convenience with Birchgrove Public School and the foreshores also nearby.
“As keen tennis players, we treat the courts like they’re our own,” Sam says. “For location, it’s hard to beat.’’
“You can stroll across to the ferry which takes Peninsula residents straight to the CBD, offering such a great way of getting to work – it’s hardly a hard journey you ever could get tired of.”
The interiors are clean and contemporary, with floorboards and floor-to-ceiling windows set alongside modern lighting and a feature staircase. The glass-framed balconies welcome all adjoining green space into the heart of the home, while the bedrooms in separate wings create impressive privacy for everyday family life.
At the centre of it all, the stone kitchen is appointed with Miele appliances and induction cooking, alongside an eco gas fireplace, ducted air-conditioning, ceiling fans and a design of natural flow and ventilation.
From a technological slant, it’s loaded with modern smarts including fast WiFi boosted throughout the home and Sonos speakers from the gardens to the living zones, as well as in the bedrooms.
With off-street parking at the front and an end-of-row position in what’s widely regarded as one of the Balmain Peninsula’s best avenues, the enduring appeal is undeniable from the outset.
